With Popmoney, you’ll be able to make good on your I.O.U.’s with ease by issuing payments using only the recipients email address, mobile number or bank account number. The recipient will get a personalized email or text message indicating you’ve sent them money with instructions on how to pick it up. If you are owed money, you can request it from someone the same way and the money will go directly into your account.

To access the Popmoney service, you must be enrolled in Bill Pay within NBT Online Banker or NBT Online Banker for Business.

  • Existing Bill Pay Users: Log in to NBT Online Banker or NBT Online Banker for Business and navigate to Popmoney under the Payments tab.

General Questions

Popmoney is a person-to-person payment service that allows you to pay other people or receive payment anywhere, at any time, using only the recipient’s email address, mobile phone number, or bank account from the convenience of NBT Online Banker or NBT Online Banker for Business. You must be enrolled in Bill Pay to use the Popmoney service.

You and your contacts will never need to exchange financial account information.

Popmoney is easy and convenient for you and the people you send money to. Users can simply receive money in their account online, saving them a trip to the bank. For example, you can use Popmoney to:

  • Send money to your child at college
  • Pay back friends for a fun outing
  • Pay your babysitter or lawn care service
  • Pay rent to your landlord or roommates

Your mobile phone number and email address can only be associated with one Popmoney account. If you wish to register for the service in NBT Online Banker using a mobile number or email address already in use on Popmoney.com, you will need to deactivate that account before registering within NBT Online Banker.

To deactivate your existing account, contact Popmoney Customer Support at 877-675-6378. Once you receive the notification email that your account is deactivated you may complete registration within NBT Online Banker.

No. You cannot use your NBT Online Banker Popmoney profile to login to Popmoney.com. Popmoney.com operates using separate and distinct user accounts. You will enjoy access to the same features and service benefits through your NBT Online Banker point of access.

Yes. Popmoney is secure and user-friendly. The service has built safety into every aspect of the experience, making it easy to use, while keeping the highest security standards.

You may easily review your Popmoney Limits within the Popmoney service tab at any time.

Dollar Amounts: Your daily, outstanding and monthly limits are set based upon a soft credit check completed by Popmoney and vary from person to person.

  • Daily Limits - Maximum that can be sent on a single day.
  • Outstanding Limits - Limits based on all pending payments restrict the amount a user can send. Outstanding limits are release three business days after a payment is sent if the recipient has not deposited the payment.
  • Monthly Limits - Maximum amount that can be sent in a rolling 30 day period.

Number of Transactions Daily Limits: 15
Number of Transactions Monthly Limits: 30
Minimum Transaction Amount: $5

On Hold:The payment was placed on hold because the sender failed verification when attempting to schedule the payment. Please call Customer Service to remove the hold.

Pending:If this is a payment you sent, the recipient was notified of this payment. The funds will be withdrawn from your bank account the next day. If this is a payment you received, the payment is being processed and the funds will be deposited into your account within three business days.

In Progress:If this is a payment you sent, the recipient was notified of this payment and the payment is being processed. If this is a payment you received, the funds are en route and will be deposited into your account within 3 business days.

Failed: A payment may fail due to the one of the following reasons:

  • The recipient is unable to validate access to the mobile phone as provided by the sender.
  • The funds could not be deposited into the bank account provided by the recipient.
  • There are insufficient funds in the account to cover the amount of the payment.

Stopped: The sender stopped the payment after the send date. The funds are returned to the sender’s account.

Expired: The recipient has 10 days from the send date to provide instructions on how to deposit the payment, after which the payment expires and the funds are returned to the sender’s account.

No. Your account and NBT Online Banker information will not be shared with the recipient. Your recipient will see your first name, last name and the message you write for the payment. If you issue the payment to your contact’s email address, your recipient will also see your email address. Similarly, you will not be able to see your recipient’s bank account information.

At this time, Popmoney is only accessible through NBT Online Banker under Payments.

Signing up for Popmoney

To enroll in Popmoney you must be first enrolled in Bill Pay within NBT Online Banker or NBT Online Banker for Business. Once that criteria is met, select the Popmoney tab under Payments and click Get Started.

Today, you can send or receive money from a direct deposit account you have linked to your NBT Online Banker (such as a checking account or money market account).

Yes, Popmoney supports the use of multiple payment accounts.

We use your email address to send you messages that are relevant to your Popmoney service activity. For example, you may receive a message when you successfully sign up for Popmoney, change your password or address or if there is a problem processing a payment.

Verification of your email address and phone number is required for security reasons. Entering the correct verification codes ensures that you have access to the email address and phone number provided. You may also be asked to verify your phone number in the future in order to send and receive payments.

No, you must login to NBT Online Banker from a desktop computer to complete enrollment in Popmoney.

If you are not an active user of Bill Pay, you will find the option to enroll in Popmoney by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking on the link "What Else Can I Do?". On the next screen you will find the option to enroll in Popmoney.

Sending Money with Popmoney

You can send money to any personal payee (contact) within the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, however not the U.S. territories.

  • Standard Delivery Payments: Free
  • Next Day Payments: $2.00
  • Next Day Payments: 10:00 p.m. EST
  • Standard Delivery Payments: 1:00 a.m. EST

The amount of your transaction will be debited from your account on the Send Date that is selected.

The minimum amount for a payment is $5.00.

You can send money using a recipient's:

  • Email Address: your contact will receive an email with instructions on how to direct the payment into his or her Eligible Transaction Account.
  • Mobile Phone Number: a text message will be sent to the recipient with instructions on how to direct the payment into his or her Eligible Transaction Account. If the recipient does not respond to the payment notification after 3 days, a reminder text message will be sent reminding him/her to act on the payment notification.
  • Eligible Transaction Account information (routing and account number): money will be directly deposited into your contact’s Eligible Transaction Account. You will also have the option to send the contact an email.

The recipient will receive the funds based upon the Next Day (one business day) or Standard Delivery Payment (one to three business days) schedule that you selected. The delivery speed will be displayed when you schedule the payment. It could take additional time if your contact has not used Popmoney or will have to log in and accept the payment.

If you are sending the payment notification through email and your contact wants to collect the funds into an Eligible Transaction Account; s/he must provide his/her account information by 1:00am EST in order to receive the funds the next business day

If you make a payment before 8:00pm EST on a business day, the funds will be debited from your account the same day. You should see the transaction on your financial institution statement the following day. If you make a payment after 8:00 p.m. EST or on a non-business day, the funds will be debited from your account the next business day. If you use a debit card to make a payment, the funds will be debited from your account immediately.

For your protection, limits have been created on how much money and how many payments can be sent during various time periods. Please click the icon next to the Amounts field to view your available limits.

Yes. You may cancel a payment any time before or on the send date, until the payment has begun processing. Your contact will be notified if you cancel a payment after a payment notification has been sent.

A personal message gives the contact the confidence that s/he is receiving the payment from someone they know. It is also an opportunity for you to communicate the purpose of the payment to the contact.

You can start typing a name, email or mobile phone number in the “To” field. If it does not exist in your contacts list, an add contact window will appear for you to enter the remaining information and add to your contact list. You can also click on the contacts tab and click on the add contact button. Enter the required fields and then click save. You may also import your address list from Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail or Gmail/Google mail.

  • Active: The payment plan has been scheduled. It will be processed per your instructions when the send date arrives.
  • Cancelled: The payment or payment plan was cancelled by the sender.
  • On Hold: the payment or payment plan was placed on hold because the sender failed verification when attempting to schedule it.
  • Pending: The payment has been scheduled. It will be processed per your instructions when the send date arrives.

Receiving Money with Popmoney

No. You can add multiple accounts linked to your NBT Online Banker login to your profile. For each payment you receive, you can choose which account the money will be deposited into.

Yes. You have 10 days from the date you receive the payment notification to provide your account information.

Automatic Deposit is the easiest and fastest way to receive money. It allows you to designate one account into which payments from all participating financial institutions will be automatically deposited. Once turned on, there’s nothing more for you to do - you will be notified of incoming payments via email or text message, they payment will be sent into your select account. You can edit Automatic Deposit Settings in Preferences.

You have 10 days from the send date to provide your account information. When a payment expires, the funds are returned to the sender. Please contact your sender to request another payment if you still wish to receive the funds.

There is no fee to receive and deposit a payment into your account.

As a security precaution, the sender may have been asked to provide your mobile number when they scheduled a payment. In that case, you must verify access to this mobile number in order to confirm your identity and receive the funds.

Do not attempt to deposit this payment. The funds will be returned to the sender if you are unable to verify access to your mobile phone. Instead, please ask the sender to edit the mobile number by clicking Activity and editing the transaction.

If the sender sends the money using your email address or mobile phone number, you will receive an email or text message with instructions on how to deposit the payment into your account. If the sender uses your account information, the money will be deposited directly into your Eligible Transaction Account. In that case, you will only receive a notification if the sender enters an optional message when submitting the payment.

Your funds will be available as early as one business day from the date that you provide your account information. You will receive a confirmation email when the credit is sent to your bank account with the date the funds will be in your account. Please review NBT Bank’s Funds Availability Policy for additional information.

Requesting Money with Popmoney

You can request money from someone using their:

  • Name and Email Address: your contact will receive an email with instructions on how to pay the request.
  • Name and Mobile Phone Number: a text message will be sent to the recipient on your behalf with instructions on how to pay the request.

The person you requested money from has to sign up with Popmoney, if not registered already.

Once he/she has signed up successfully and pays against the request, you should receive the payment within three business days. The payment will be deposited into the account you selected when sending the request.

For your protection, limits have been created on the number and value of requests that can be sent during various time periods. Please click the icon next to the Amounts field to view your available limits.

There is no cost to request money through Popmoney.

No. A fee will be deducted only if you receive a payment. No fee will be charged if the request is not paid.

Yes. A request you make to another person to send you money via Popmoney can be cancelled if the request recipient has not yet initiated the payment.

A recipient can pay a request with any Eligible Transaction Account. If (s)he is not an active Popmoney user through NBT Online Banker, s(he) should visit the Popmoney Terms of Use for more information on Eligible Transaction Accounts.

Any request you send will be valid for 30 days. After 30 days, the recipient will no longer see the request and will not be able to make a payment against it.

Paying a Request or Invoice with Popmoney

When a user requests money, you will receive an email or text message with instructions on how to pay the Request.

Login to NBT Online Banker and find Popmoney in the menu. The Request will appear in your To Do list where you can then pay it.

Once you have paid, it will take 1-3 business days for the requester to receive your payment. The money will be deposited into the requester’s bank account that he/she provided when initiating the Request.

All Requests are valid for 30 days. After 30 days, the Requests expire and they will no longer show in your To Do list.

You can pay up to the amount requested or up to the limit you are allowed to send. You cannot pay an amount higher than that. If the Request is open (no amount specified), then you will be able to pay up to the limit the requestor is allowed to receive or the limit you are allowed to send. Some Requests may be fixed and so you may not be able to change the payment amount at all.

Making a Donation with Popmoney

The delivery speed will be displayed when you schedule the donation. Donations are normally received within one to three business days.

For your protection, limits have been established on how much money and how many donations can be sent during various time periods. Please click the icon next to the Amounts field once logged into your account to view your available limits.

There is no fee charged to the donor when you donate to a non-profit organization that is in the Popmoney directory.

Yes. You may cancel a donation any time until the processing of the Payment (please see the Popmoney Terms of Use Agreement for more information). The charity will be notified if the donation is canceled.

When you make a donation, you will see an option to make it recurring. You can choose a start date and select from one of the reoccurring schedule options shown.

Any receipt needed for tax purposes will come directly from the charitable organization. Please contact the charitable organization you donated to, for more information.
