New Berlin, NY (March 16, 2018) – Seniors at the Unadilla Valley Central School in New Berlin spent some of their class time with NBT Bank as part of the Strive® Financial Literacy program.
NBT Bank of New Berlin Branch Manager Sonya Houston and NBT Bank of Edmeston Branch Manager Brooke Anderson presented to the group of 45 seniors on Thursday, March 15. These students learned to calculate the long-term costs of daily indulgences such as food and entertainment and consider how cutting back on frivolous spending could add up to significant savings in the long run.
“High school seniors need to be able to understand the impact of certain spending decisions and determine the amount of money they can potentially save by altering their spending habits, especially as they prepare to move toward financial independence,” said Houston.
Anderson added: “By helping students recognize wasteful spending habits and understand the impact of their financial decisions now, they develop strong financial habits as they transition to college and the workplace.”
Strive® provides in-classroom, in-branch and online financial education to help youth and young adults establish a positive relationship with money, grow their money skills, and navigate personal finance as their financial needs mature. NBT Bank’s Strive® program works with local teachers to help today’s youth grow into financially responsible, independent adults. Since launching the program in 2012, the bank has conducted more than 1,000 presentations to school districts and community groups.
