October is Cyber Security Awareness Month

October 2011 marks the eighth annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month. This year's theme, "Our Shared Responsibility," reminds us that all computer users have a role in securing cyberspace. It is important to stay current on simple safety tips, current threats and steps to take if you become a victim of cybercrime.

Each week during the month of October, the Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) will spotlight a different critical cyber security issue. In addition to traditional awareness themes such as cyber security practices at home and in schools, National Cyber Security Awareness Month will explore impacts to small business, law enforcement, the nation's workforce and professional development.

Following is a summary of each week's topic:

Week 1: Stop. Think. Connect.
Emphasizes general cyber security awareness with events highlighting the "Stop. Think. Connect." Campaign
Week 2: Education/Workforce
Showcases the urgent need to develop cyber education programs to train the next generation cyber workforce
Week 3: Cybercrime
Focuses on national and local efforts to prevent identity theft and other cyber crimes
Week 4: Small Business
Highlights strategies small and medium-sized business owners can use to bolster their own cyber security defenses.

Throughout the month, NCSA will release information on each weekly theme and the overall importance of online safety and security. Feel free to share this information with family, friends and co-workers. Reminding everyone of the importance of information security is essential.
