Test Message SMiShing Alert

May 30, 2014 - It has been reported that there are text message attempts targeting bank customers. These text message attacks are often referred to as "SmiShing." The texts appear to be targeting random consumers within the 315 area code with the warning that their card has been limited due to a security error. The message reads: “(Bank name) Regional FCU important message. Please call 516-302-1002. Attention is requested.”  When the number is called back there is a recording asking for full card number, pin and social security number. These text messages are not legitimate and are not coming from the Bank.

Please Use extreme caution when responding to unusual contact via text or telephone. Never give out personal or account information to an unauthorized communication such as text or automated phone messages.

If you received one of these calls and provided your ATM or Debit Card information, please contact NBT Bank immediately at 1-800-NBT-BANK (1-800-628-2265).
